Today you can buy it almost anywhere for just pennies per pound. It’s so cheap that at most self-service drink dispensers you can take as much as you want and no one cares.

But it wasn’t always so. Until relatively recently ice was available only at the whim of Mother Nature. And enjoying it out of season required harvesting in freezing temperatures then storing in heavily insulated locations and hoping it would last until cold weather returned. Modern refrigeration technology has changed all that, of course, making ice so ubiquitous that we don’t even think much about it.

So now that the technology is commonplace, who actually embeds it into the products that create the abundant supplies of ice to chill our drinks, fill our ice chests, and soothe our sports injuries?

One of the biggest global players in this market is Ice-O-Matic®, a local company with a 50+ year history in ice-making technology. Located in Denver, Ice-O-Matic® manufactures, distributes, and supplies a wide range of ice-related products including cubers, flakers,
storage bins, dispensers and water filters.

In order to remain competitive they must be constantly innovating. Recent technological introductions include AgION™ Antimicrobial Compound in their ICE Series cube icemakers and their extended waterfilter warranty program, that have resulted in the creation of products that are more efficient for business and safer for the environment. With a distribution network that spans the globe, Ice-O-Matic® products and service support are available throughout the world.

This month we’re delighted to have the opportunity to tour their plant and see how metal and plastic are turned into products good enough to be covered by a 7-year warranty, the longest in the industry. Please join us for an evening of enlightenment and networking.
